Portland Motorcycle Show

I came home early on Sunday from visiting family out of town specifically so I could attend the Portland Motorcycle Show at the Expo Center. What can I say? I went to the Motorcycle Show. Saw the motorcycle. Came home. Let’s do the math. $7 to park, $8 each for my wife and I. And the entire show could have fit inside your average high school gymnasium. What a total waste of time and money. Fortunately for me there was a very small contingent of Harley Davidson bikes and merchandise, but I suppose if that was your thing it would

Burgers and cokes and fries, oh my!

Yesterday three other V-Strom riders and I met at Jim Dandy’s on Sandy Blvd. for lunch. We’re shooting for a weekly or bi-weekly East Side Strommer’s Lunch gig and this was the first attempt at it. Phil, Zach, Kevin and I talked shop over bacon burgers and onion rings. It’s nice to hear other riders talk about the products and bike accessories they’ve tried, trips they’ve been on, and their ideas about safety and riding technique. After lunch Zach and Kevin returned to work while Phil and I rode to Portland Motorcycle just down the road and browsed their store.

Ride to Work Day

It’s the annual “Ride to Work” day today (link) and despite being the driest and hottest time of year in Oregon, it rained. That’s the joy of living in the Pacific Northwest, and the reason why it’s so green around here. Besides, as Neil Peart said when asked if there was any weather he wouldn’t ride [his motorcycle] in, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad choices in clothing.” I actually enjoyed the ride into work this morning. One trick I learned is to rub shaving cream on the inside and outside of my helmet’s visor. It prevents

Sold: 1986 Honda Rebel Limited Edition

[UPDATE: This bike has been sold] I’m selling my 1986 Honda Rebel Limited Edition. It’s an outstanding bike but I only have room in my garage for one motorcycle and I’m unwilling to park something so precious outside. Here’s the text from my ad on craigslist: 1986 Honda Rebel Limited Edition (this is a rare bike). It is in great working condition and runs great but has a few minor cosmetic issues (scratched exhaust pipe, two tiny dents on tank, and the seat could be re-upholstered). 9,300 miles. Recent work: Flushed front brake line, replaced front brake manifold, new rear

Getting legal

The DMV was busy. I was an idiot for going in there on a Monday morning. I waited a full hour before I was helped, and only because some gal got tired of waiting and handed me her ticket as she walked out. That upgraded me from #41 to #37. $129 later I walked out with a temporary title/registration to the bike and a new driver’s license. My photo makes me look like I have a cold or am a raging alcoholic; my nose is red and my face is pale. Whatever, I can now legally ride and that’s what
